Different Types of P&O MPPT for PV system in MATLAB

We explore different Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) techniques for solar PV systems. Four MPPT methods were discussed: Conventional MPPT, Variable Step Size MPPT, Improved Variable Step Size MPPT, and Variable Step Size with Global Scanning MPPT. We analyze each technique's working principles, implement details, and compare their performance to determine the most effective method.

  1. Conventional MPPT:

  • Utilizes fixed parameters for duty cycle adjustment based on PV voltage and current.

  • Involves basic tracking algorithms to maintain power output at the maximum point.

  1. Variable Step Size MPPT:

  • Introduces variability in the step size for duty cycle adjustment.

  • The step size is adjusted dynamically based on system conditions to improve tracking efficiency.

  1. Improved Variable Step Size MPPT:

  • Enhances the variable step size approach by incorporating two step sizes.

  • Improves tracking accuracy by adapting step sizes according to PV characteristics.

  1. Variable Step Size with Global Scanning MPPT:

  • Implements a scanning mechanism to detect optimal power points globally.

  • Adjusts duty cycle based on power differences between PV and converter outputs.

Analysis of Results:

  • Simulation results demonstrate the performance of each MPPT technique under constant irradiation and load resistance conditions.

  • Variable Step Size with Global Scanning MPPT shows superior efficiency and maximum power tracking ratio compared to other methods.

  • The efficiency of Variable Step Size with Global Scanning MPPT is measured at 99.5%, with a maximum power tracking ratio of 99.68%.

Conclusion:

Based on the comparative analysis, Variable Step Size with Global Scanning MPPT emerges as the most effective method for maximizing power output in solar PV systems. Its adaptive scanning mechanism and variable step size approach result in superior performance and enhanced tracking accuracy. Implementing this MPPT technique can significantly improve the efficiency and reliability of solar PV systems.
