Apolipoprotein E type 4 allele and apolipoprotein A-I phenotypes influence changes in atherosclerosis in the aorta and carotid arteries after myocardial infarction. The role of apolipoprotein E (Apo E) genotype and Apo A-I phenotypes was investigated in a prospective study of 79 patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) with and without percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). The extent of atherosclerosis in the aorta and the carotid arteries was evaluated by quantitative intima-media thickness (IMT) and in combination with the density of the atherosclerotic plaque, defined as plaque area. Apo E genotype was associated with significantly increased IMT in the ascending aorta, the abdominal aorta, and the carotid arteries. A significant association with high-density plaques was found only in the carotid arteries. The results were not confounded by sex, age, smoking, or body mass index. Moreover, there was a significant interaction between genotype and Apo A-I phenotypes on the atherosclerotic burden, indicating that Apo E type 4 allele influences the degree of atherosclerosis in patients with apo A-I phenotypes.#include "qxmpp_plugin.h" #include "qxmpp_introspector.h" #include #include #
